Welcome to Berkeley Playhouse!

The 2016-17 season celebrates our core mission of presenting great theatrical works that embrace music as the ultimate form of storytelling. Within these five productions you’ll find exceptional and diverse characters who, through music, find their inner-voice to help them sing their own unique song.

I am thrilled that Berkeley Playhouse is a place where intergenerational families can discover together incredible stories and exceptional characters that mirror all facets of our community, and our daily lives.

5 shows for the whole family

Peter and the Starcatcher  September 22 - October 16
Before Peter Pan met the Darling family, Captain Hook, or had a merry band of followers, he was just a boy—and a distrustful one at that. In this ingenious prequel to one of modern literatures greatest stories, Peter and the Starcatcher is a swashbuckling, imaginative, music-infused laugh-out-loud adventure that proves that if you believe, imagination can give you wings, and hope can make you fly.

Disney's Beauty and the Beast  November 10 - December 23
The Disney (and Broadway!) favorite gets the Berkeley Playhouse makeover as Associate Artistic Director Kimberly Dooley helms this all new production featuring a diverse and multigenerational cast of dozens. Featuring some of Disney’s most popular songs and characters, you won’t want to miss this magical musical adventure guaranteed to delight audiences of all ages.

Billy Elliot The Musical  February 16 - March 25
When 11 year old Billy Elliott stumbles into a ballet class, his spirit of creativity and expression is awakened. Set amongst a working-class town facing a miners' strike in 1980s Britain, Elton John’s Tony Award-winning musical about following your passion and challenging expectations—from parents, friends, and community—is for anyone who has dared to dream, if even for a moment, that they could dance.

Urinetown, The Musical   April 6 - April 30
Don’t let the title fool you! In the hysterically clean Urinetown, The Musical, Les Mis, Fiddler on the Roof, and even West Side Story gets spoofed in this Tony Award-winning socially aware comedy that takes on corporate greed and environmental responsibility while spoofing some of Broadway’s biggest hits. Set in a not-so-distant future in which water is in short supply—and city residents must pay to use restrooms—a young bathroom attendant decides to challenge authority and free the toilets! As clean as a newly scrubbed toilet, and as fresh as any musical you’ve ever seen.

Tarzan, The Stage Musical Based on the Disney Film  July 6 - August 13
Swinging in to close Berkeley Playhouse’s 2016-17 season is the musical adventure Tarzan. With a thrilling score from one pop-music’s greatest icons, Phil Collins, Tarzan is the ultimate story of a unique family drawn together by fate, and bound by love. Pulsating with life, audiences will journey to the African jungles in this Berkeley Playhouse visioning that features a live percussive environment, stunning acrobats, and a heartfelt story about what it means to be a family. Tarzan is next summer’s most exciting musical event!
