About Our Theater Arts Education Programs

Each year, Berkeley Playhouse welcomes over 1,200 students from grades Pre-K through 12 into our home at the Julia Morgan Theater. We believe in the importance and power of the youth voice and believe that theater has the unique ability to develop confident, compassionate, and empowered young people to have a voice in our community.

Below is an overview of the different programs we offer in our Classes & Camps (seasonal, grades PreK-9) and our Youth Productions (audition-based).

Where should my child start out?
A typical progression through our program is:
Day Camp and/or After School Class ➡ Skills Class ➡ YouthStage (Audition-Based)

Our Arts Education programming offers the following:

Fun, Interactive, and Imaginative Musical Theater Camps
For Grades K-6
Typically offered Mon-Fri 9am-3pm during:

  • Winter Break (December/January)
  • Spring Break (March)
  • Summer (June-August)

➡  Exciting Story-based and Skill-building Musical Theater Classes
For Grades PreK-9
Typically offered once a week after school for 5-12 weeks during:

  • Fall (~September-November)
  • Winter/Spring (~January-April)

➡  Fully Staged Musical Productions in YouthStage
YouthStage is divided into two age groups:

  • KidStage, for grades 3-7
  • TeenStage, for grades 8-12

Both KidStage and TeenStage are audition-based youth companies that produce full-length musicals three times a year. Directed and designed by local theater professionals, KidStage and TeenStage shows feature students playing all the roles. Over the course of the rehearsal process, young company members develop their individual craft and learn to thrive collectively as part of an ensemble, all while building a polished and fully-produced final show, presented to family and friends.
